More Companies Head Back to Fully In-Person in 2025 – What It Means For Events

2025 may have only just begun, but it’s already looking like it could be a banner year for in-person events. Following the recent flurry of high-profile companies like Amazon and JPMorgan Chase announcing their return to in-office work policies, the event industry also seems poised to make a similar shift away from virtual and hybrid — bringing an emphasis back to in-person events and face-to-face experiences.  So what does this mean for event planners?  And the future of virtual events?  Let’s dive in and discuss:

Why Face-to-Face Is Back on the Rise

While virtual meetings and hybrid events offered a needed flexibility in a time where in-person events were sometimes impossible or health and safety was a concern, they often lacked the energy and engagement of being physically present. There’s a unique power in sharing the same space—whether it’s the excitement of a keynote presentation, the spontaneous conversations between sessions, or the buzz of a busy expo floor. These moments create lasting impressions that digital events often struggle to replicate.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed by companies or event planners as attendees continue to report higher satisfaction with in-person events, valuing the immersive experience and genuine networking opportunities. In fact, a recent Harvard Business Review study showed that 88% of respondents found in-person meetings essential in creating long-term positive relationships.[1]

The Human Element Matters

At the heart of this resurgence is a basic human need: connection. In-person interactions build stronger relationships, foster clearer communication, and allow for those subtle non-verbal cues that deepen understanding. Whether it’s closing a deal over coffee or sharing ideas during a workshop, the value of direct human interaction is undeniable.

But does this mean the end of hybrid and virtual events?  Not quite…

In-Person Events Are Evolving

What’s exciting is how in-person events and conferences are evolving. Organizers are blending the best of both worlds—keeping the convenience of hybrid and virtual event platforms while amplifying the live experience. Think personalized event apps, paperless agendas, self-guided content, and access to bonus digital materials. And for those event-goers that may be a little rusty at in-person events, think about technologies that can handle late and last-minute registrations or solutions to help streamline check-ins, like onsite badge printing. When available, providing virtual sessions and networking opportunities or using hybrid technologies that allow people to participate or follow along from their devices is also a big win.

Moreover, events are becoming more intentional, focusing on creating memorable, meaningful experiences rather than just filling a schedule. Attendees are seeking value, and organizers are rising to the occasion with interactive sessions, collaborative workshops, and networking opportunities designed for deeper connections.

Looking Ahead to 2025

We’re seeing the latest shift back to in-person workplaces spill over into the event industry, as businesses and attendees are recognizing the value of face-to-face interactions for building stronger relationships, driving collaboration, and enhancing engagement.  And by combining the energy of in-person events with the improved accessibility, networking, and content availability that hybrid technologies have built over the past few years, organizers can create impactful experiences that deliver lasting value. Here’s to a great year of events ahead!
